Step 2 — use it on a listing
Open a vehicle listing on Cars.com, Autotrader, CarGurus, Carvana, TrueCar, CarMax, Craigslist, or Facebook Marketplace, then click the bookmark. It opens curbspec.com in a new tab with the VIN and mileage already in the form.
What it actually does
Reads the current page's own text, locally, for a VIN — the page's structured data first, then a labeled "VIN:", then a plain 17-character pattern as a last resort. If it finds one, it opens curbspec.com with that VIN (and mileage, if it found one) in the URL. That's it — no data collection, no tracking, no background activity. If it doesn't find a VIN, it says so.

- Does this bookmarklet collect or send any data?
- No. It runs entirely in your browser, reads the current page's own text to look for a VIN and mileage, and does nothing else — unless you click it, in which case it opens curbspec.com in a new tab with the VIN in the URL, exactly like typing it in yourself. Nothing is collected, stored, or sent anywhere else.
- What sites does it work on?
- Any used-car listing page — it looks for a VIN in the page's own structured data first, then a labeled VIN, then falls back to any 17-character VIN pattern on the page. It works well on Cars.com, Autotrader, CarGurus, Carvana, TrueCar, CarMax, Craigslist, and Facebook Marketplace vehicle listings, and reasonably on most other dealer sites that show a VIN.
- What if it doesn't find a VIN?
- It'll say so instead of guessing — a private-seller listing that never states the VIN just doesn't have one to find. You can still paste whatever you do know (year, make, model, mileage) straight into curbspec.com; a VIN sharpens the report, it isn't required to get one.
- Is there a Chrome extension instead of a bookmarklet?
- Yes — a version that shows the same one-click button automatically on listing pages, no dragging required, is currently in review with the Chrome Web Store. The bookmarklet works today in the meantime, including on Safari and mobile browsers the Store version won't reach.
